Senator McCain tapped Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate. This decision caught many by surprise, considering her name was tossed around as a dark horse for the VP spot. This decision should help Sen. McCain shore up the right of the Republican party, of which I ( and sometimes my wife) lean towards. This will allow Sen. McCain to concentrate on the undecided moderates that he will need to win the election.
I was not a big McCain supporter, but picking Gov. Palin has helped me to be comfortable with his candidacy. It shows that he does recognize those of us that believe in less government, at all levels, and individual freedoms.
What I like about the VP pick is her experience and beliefs:
1. She is a concerned conservationist
2. Believes strongly in the 2nd Amendment (if you don't know what it is, look it up).
3. Was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. This city has a strong Mayor form of office, where the Mayor has a major impact on city affairs.
4. Was elected the first female Governor of Alaska, another executive position.
5. Commander in Chief of the Alaska National Guard. She has authority over the 49th Missile Defense Battalion, which is on active duty status as part of the U.S. missile defense system.
6. As Governor she has over an 80% approval rating. How many elected officials can boast that?
7. Is seen as a fiscal and moral conservative.
8. Was chairman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.
9. Has been compared to President Reagan on her charm and whit.
10. Strong Pro-Life stance. This makes many on the left shudder. After all, it is every females right to abort a baby, by chopping it up in the womb and having it vacuumed out for disposal with the rest of the garbage
The list goes on.
There are Some that feel there is some questionable baggage that she brings.
1. Investigation into whether the firing of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan, was politically motivated, which I think it will be dismissed as groundless.
2. Strong proponent of sexual abstinence, even though her unmarried daughter has become pregnant (although the daughter and boyfriend are now engaged and plan to be married).
3. Seen as a backwoods, self reliant hick from a small town in a nowhere state called Alaska, by the urban and metro elite. This makes her even more appealing to me since she obviously has more common sense than all of Washington D.C. combined.
So far this is the only baggage that her opponents are able to come up with. It is my belief that these things will not hurt her attempt at becoming Vice President of the United States.
McCain-Palin For President and Vice President
That sounds good to a small town hick from the nowhere state of Kansas, that I am.
